Dear MoveOn member,

In less than 48 hours, Congress will vote on an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would permanently deny marriage equality to same-sex couples. This is unprecedented -- never before has our Constitution been amended to take away anyone's rights. We've got to fight back.

Please remember:

Be considerate of the West Coast viewers before posting anything about the show unless it's under a cut tag. If you're unsure on how to use a cut-tag, well..here ya go:

< lj-cut > ... < /lj-cut > (but take out the spaces)

This can be used in a journal entry to hide part, or all, of an entry. When the entry appears in your journal or on someone's Friends page, everything after an < lj-cut > tag and before a closing < /lj-cut > tag will be replaced by a link to the Read Comments page. The Read Comments page always displays the entire entry as well as any comments made on it. When the < lj-cut > is closed with < /lj-cut >, any text placed after the closing < /lj-cut > tag will also display on the journal, instead of just on the Read Comments page.

By default, the link will say "Read more...", but if you want it to say something else like "Cut off here", you can write the tag as < lj-cut text="Cut off here" > ***

And yes, I'm posting this during QAF because by some cruel twist of fate my satellite is not letting me get Showtime tonight.

(Official Link) VH1 Goes Inside: Queer As Folk

There's a small clip from the show -- it looks good! Don't forget--it's Thursday at 11:00 pm.

And from Washington Blade

It's Showtime, again
Premium cable's Showtime rides gay series to the top, just in time for the return of Queer As Folk and VH1 Divas.
Friday, April 02, 2004

WITH THE RECENT flood of gay visibility in the media, TV novices might think that this trend began with Bravo's Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and the latest debates over equal marriage rights for same-sex couples.

Those who've been around at least since 1997, however, probably still fondly recall Ellen DeGeneres' watershed coming-out moment on prime time. Then, of course, came Will & Grace on NBC, and Queer As Folk on Showtime.

Now, Ellen is thriving on her own talk show on NBC, and with the impending departure of Friends and Frasier, W&G is positioned to become one of the peacock network's flagship sitcoms.

Thanks to gay-themed programming like QAF and this winter's The L Word, Showtime is riding at an all-time high, an official there told the New York Post. Right now we’re on this really strong up curve, with a lot of momentum, Matt Blank, the premium cable station's executive officer, said.

Kagan, a media research firm, reports that Showtime made $300 million last year, after turning no profit just seven years ago.

SHOWTIME MIGHT EVEN BE looking to add to its stable of gay programming.

But something you may not know is that on April 8th VH1 Goes Inside: Queer As Folk! It will feature cast interviews, show info and such.

I just heard the news on Showtime. There's no info on sho.com/queer or VH1.com as of yet but I figure hearing it pretty much from the horses mouth makes it a go.

LJ National Protest Day
I believe in the sanctity of marriage.

Meaning that if two people love each other that they should be allowed to marry in the eyes of the government and God, regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, physical disability or sex.

Marriage is about love and commitment, about spending the rest of your life with that person, about being protected under the laws of the state and nation when your spouse dies.

The more I think about the President's declaration, the madder I get. It's like Quayle taking on Murphy Brown saying that being a single mother is a disgrace.

I don't want the government telling me who I can and cannot love.

May I suggest that on October 15th, everyone post your protest in your LJ by way of icon, story, or whatever you feel appropriate!

Feel free to pass this suggestion around

MARRIAGE IS ABOUT LOVE AND COMMITMENT...PASS IT ON!

Award-winning photographer Mark Seliger will be behind the camera on Thursday, September 18 in Los Angeles to shoot the cast of QAF for the upcoming Vanity Fair cover. The gang will then head back to Toronto, reporting for work the following Monday, September 22.

Gale movie news
Rhinoceros Eyes has completed post production and was viewed last Thursday, August 28, 2003 by the crew. One of the Production Assistants I spoke with said he found the film to be "most interesting, although a little dark." If you'd like to see Gale playing a singing detective, the film premieres on Saturday, September 6, 2003 at the Toronto Film Festival, and again on Tuesday, September 9. The Toronto Star asked 28 experts to give them their three top picks for the titles to look out for at the festival. Piers Handling, the festival director, chose Rhinoceros Eyes as one of his three. "Being David Cronenberg's nephew doesn't hurt but this first feature, centring on a youth who works in a prop shop and which mixes fantasy and horror, sounds more than intriguing," he said.

The article Mahoney and Harold become "Fathers" is written by Romeo San Vicente for Deep Inside Hollywood, August 20, 2003. It reads: "Gay faves John Mahoney (cranky Martin Crane of "Frasier") and Gale Harold (slutty Brian Kinney of "Queer as Folk") are taking on the new movie "Fathers and Sons." The two actors, along with Bradley Whitford, Samantha Mathis and Kathy Baker, are among the cast of the independent feature about a trio of L.A. families who all live on the same street. The film was shot in three parts by three different directors; Mahoney plays dad to redheaded hottie Ron Eldard in one segment, while Harold portrays a prodigal son in another. Shooting wrapped in August, but there's no word yet on a premiere date."

Fab movie news
Also being screened at the Festival, in the Perspective Canada programme, is Hollywood North, Peter O'Brian's comedy about the trials and tribulations of making a film in Canada. Fabrizio Filippo (formerly "Ethan" on QAF) plays an "up-and-comer" in the movie.

Dean Armstrong
According to his official website, Dean Armstrong is spending six weeks coaching the lead actors on the Alliance Atlantis film Saint Ralph. He will also begin work on season 4 of QAF in a few weeks, although the exact number of episodes in which he will appear is yet to be determined. The site has some great new photos of Dean in the "Other" gallery, including ones of him with Barna Moricz ("Kip" from QAF, Season 1, episodes 113 and 114) singing karaoke and horsing around at the Poor Alex Theatre in Toronto where Dean celebrated his birthday.

Peter Paige News
Eden Lane, featuring Peter Paige, opened on August 17 at the La Jolla Playhouse. Reviewer Welton Jones (sandiego.com's Arts Critic) felt that the casting was one of the strengths of the show, and praised Peter's work, although he felt the character was written somewhat vaguely. (Read more).
Hal Sparks news
Hal Spars indicated to fans at his recent Viper Room gig that he will be performing his music on the new Mike Bullard latenight talk-variety show which premieres in the Fall

Hal has also been working on a film called The Lightning Big. I was written and directed by the bass player in Hal's band, King's X. . It is the story of a young boy growing up poor and misunderstood in the rural South and dreams of escaping by becoming a special effects make-up artist in Hollywood. In it, Hal plays "Deputy Dale".

Hal has also directed a few music videos for King's X.

As if that wasn't enough, Hal has a new, half-hour weekly commentary show on VH-1 called Popshot, similar to the pop culture commentary specials "I love the 70s" and "I love the 80s". He hopes to have about three episodes filmed before he and the rest of the cast are officially due back at work for QAF on September 22.

Other QAF news
In a recent article for the Los Angeles Times entitled Where's TV's gay courtship leading?, Brian Lowry talks about the latest "infatuation" with homosexuals on television, and whether it benefits the gay community or exploits it. He says, "Ron Cowen -- an executive producer of Queer as Folk, the Showtime drama that capitalizes on pay TV's latitude to portray promiscuous gay characters unflinchingly -- said he finds it 'discouraging to see gay men presented as frivolous stereotypes . . . experts in how to wax your eyebrows, pick out a shirt and wallpaper a kitchen.' As for criticism directed at Queer as Folk, fellow producer Daniel Lipman says the series captures a slice of gay life -- albeit one less predigested for widespread consumption. 'Not everyone is in a monogamous relationship living in the suburbs,' he said, conceding that most viewers probably remain more comfortable with 'a safer, sanitized view of gay people.' " Read the full article here.

And last but not least... The biggest queer in Kansas is a charming piece written by Trent J. Koland, exclusively for Advocate.com and posted August 18, 2003. "When a Burger King cashier—at the drive-through, no less—starts a conversation about Queer as Folk, you know you’re the gayest guy around. But what starts as a feeling of isolation can turn unexpectedly into something very different."

Never Tear Us Apart: A QAF Novel
The new novel comes out in Sept.
Description HereCollapse )

Bang, Bang, You're Dead
The movie Bang Bang You're Dead, produced by Vancouver-based Legacy Filmworks, is being released on video under the Paramount label on September 16, 2003. Randy Harrison plays Sean, a bad high school student and potential shooter in the film.

Gale Harold Film News
[unconfirmed]: RHINOCEROS EYES (featuring Gale Harold as a detective with musical aspirations) will premiere in the Discovery programme at the 28th Toronto International Film Festival in September. Discovery offers a unique window on contemporary international cinema and introduces the public to gifted and innovative new directors (like Aaron Woodley). Films that have screened in the Discovery programme in the past include the Peter Mullan's universally acclaimed THE MAGDALENE SISTERS (the screening of which Randy Harrison attended in NYC recently), David Gordon Green's GEORGE WASHINGTON and the 2002 AGF People's Choice Award winner, WHALE RIDER. The official Film Title List of all films to be screened at the Festival will be available on Tuesday, August 19, 2003, after 2:00 PM. The official schedule for all screenings will be available on August 26, 2003. Advance single tickets go on sale September 3. Visit my Rhinoceros Eyes page for details.

Particles of Truth has been submitted to the Haifa International Film Festival 2003, to be held in Israel in October. The official site is in Hebrew, but you can find more information (in English) at the Directory of International Film and Video Festivals.

Thea Gill News
The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force has officially announced that it will present Thea Gill with a 2003 National Leadership Award at the Provincetown Sunset Deck Party on August 24. Read A Task Force Exclusive Interview: Thea Gill by Michelle Klemens and Freda Ready, in which she says of her character, "I would want people to think that Lindsay was a character of great heart and a character who struggled a little bit with her inhibitions, but was victorious over them and victorious over her fears and her own struggles of being a women from a traditionally conservative family. I hope people think she had warmth and a nurturing attitude toward life, family and friends."

Hal Sparks News
VH1's I Love the 70's week kicks off at Borders Books & Music® at 100 Broadway in New York City on August 12, 2003. Hal Sparks will be on hand in the store from 1 to 2pm (to be confirmed) to help promote the television series (in which he is also featured)

New pictures of Hal Sparks are up at wireimage.com from the Nintendo Fusion Tour Presents Evanescence - Arrivals and VIP Lounge at Universal City in California.

NEW: As some of you know, Hal will be performing at the Viper Room later this month (August 18). However, since the infamous bar is always packed, Hal is concerned that some fans might not be able to get in, and he is therefore planning to have another, 'fans only' show at an undisclosed LA rehearsal space, if there is enough interest. If you are going to be in the area, and would be interested in seeing Hal perform, please send an email to KC at kinneycutie@yahoo.com and let her know.

I read this in a friends journal and I thought it just described Brian perfectly so I figured I should share...

METROSEXUAL-(MET.roh.sek.shoo.ul) n. A dandyish narcissist in love with not only himself, but also his urban lifestyle. —metrosexuality n.

Example Citation:
The only problem facing the metrosexual in an otherwise carefree existence is the inescapable effects of ageing. If 30 is 45 in gay years, then 26 is retirement age for the metrosexual — and no amount of biotechnological, rehydrating, whale sperm dermo-care can alter that.
—Jonathan Trew, "I love me so much," The Scotsman, July 24, 2002

Backgrounder:
Mark Simpson invented this term in 1994 (see the earliest citation, below), but it has been picked up by numerous media outlets, including The Observer, The Herald, and Maclean's magazine. Here's Simpson's succinct description of the metrosexual type that appeared recently in the Salon.com online magazine:
The typical metrosexual is a young man with money to spend, living in or within easy reach of a metropolis — because that's where all the best shops, clubs, gyms and hairdressers are. He might be officially gay, straight or bisexual, but this is utterly immaterial because he has clearly taken himself as his own love object and pleasure as his sexual preference. Particular professions, such as modeling, waiting tables, media, pop music and, nowadays, sport, seem to attract them but, truth be told, like male vanity products and herpes, they're pretty much everywhere.
—Mark Simpson, "Meet the metrosexual," Salon.com, July 22, 2002

Principle photography for Season 4 of QAF begins on September 29. Many familiar faces will be back in Pittsburgh, and there will be some surprises as well. Stay tuned for updates on cast members and Property management.

Gale begins work on Street Time tomorrow, playing a rock star just out of prison, with a marriage that, according to the unofficial website, will remind everyone of the Curt Cobain/Courtney Love-fest. He'll be filming for at least two weeks, and will appear in two episodes of the Showtime drama which premieres on August 6. The news page says "if you want a hint about what Gale Harold is going to do for the series, rent the DVD Performance, starring Mick Jagger."
[For those who haven't seen it, reviewer Tom Keogh reports that the 1970 British film revolves around a London gangster who has to hide away for a while and ends up staying with a fading rock star played by Jagger. The latter recognizes something of his old, daring self in the violent criminal, and after pushing open the boundaries of the hood's experience with psychedelics, the two men begin to intertwine as one. The film is an exciting pool of ideas about real and presumed power, about the mysteries of "performance" as a pressing outward toward an abandonment of identity and embrace of revelation. Beneath it all, however, is the idea that the worlds of these two men--pop shaman and underworld soldier--are not dissimilar in their self-serving goals.]

Gale Harold is a busy man... he is working on a new independent film called "Father and Sons" which began shooting in Los Angeles yesterday and will wrap in less than three weeks. He plays a character named Elliot Parker in what is anticipated to be a very volatile role. Rodrigo Garcia, who is an accomplished cinematographer, has directed several episodes of Six Feet Under and was the screenwriter for the movie Frida, is the Executive Prouducer of this new picture. He and two other Writers/Directors -- Jared Rappaport and Robert Spera -- are each responsible for one part of the trilogy for this feature. Julie Lynn serves as Producer. Also appearing in the film are Kathy Baker, Barbara Barrie, Joseph Bologna, Lisa Edelstein, Joanna Gleason and John Mahoney. Interesting to note: Barbara Barrie appeared in Law & Order: SVU with Gale, and Joanna Gleason directed Randy Harrison in his New York stage play "A Letter From Ethel Kennedy."

The second QAF paperback novel by Quinn Brockton is due out later this Summer (currently listed with an August 1st release date on Amazon.com and a September release date on Barnes and Noble.com). The title is "Never Tear Us Apart: A Queer as Folk Novel" and is 272 pages long.

Can someone help me? Anyone who downloads Queer As Folk, I need your help. I'm at college and all file-sharing programs are disabled on the network--therefore, no nothing. Please, I'm seriously spasming without this and I am down on my knees begging for help. Can someone send me the season finale over AIM or even MSN? I can download any messenger. Please, please, please. I'll even send you something through PayPal if you want.

Guess I should go read the spoilers I have been avoiding all week...

"I often get told, 'You're so much more attractive than Emmett is,' and what I really think that boils down to is I'm not as nelly as Emmett is. I love playing Emmett. I learn a lot from him. The fact that he can be completely who he is, completely nelly, and just not need the validation from someone else is I think a really profound thing, particularly for young gay men to learn."
-- Actor Peter Paige, who plays Emmett Honeycutt on "Queer As Folk," in an interview with PlanetOut News at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles, April 26.

Queer As Folk could get some Emmy nominations. More specifically, Hal Sparks for Best Actor and Robert Gant for Best Supporting Actor.

Wow.

tonight's QAFCollapse )

As I was watching it I kept thinking, "Oh! This is my favorite scene tonight..!" Then a better one came along, then another .. Way to go CowLip, you did a FINE job with tonight. So fine in fact that I'm not too upset we have to wait two weeks on another ep. I tell you what, if a shorter season means better quality episodes? I'm all for it.

[sigh] I love this show.

I know I've been an incredibly shitty community maintainer lately and for that I apologize..Real life seemed to have stepped in there for a while. But I will work tonight and tomorrow on getting the recaps for the past three eps up.

Until then? You guys are ENTIRELY too quiet! What did you think about tonight's episode?!
